Bulbophyllum auratum

My Bulbophyllum auratum decided to throw out seven flower stalks recently. Six of them carries pink flower while one stalk of flower is yellow in color. I must have placed two different plants together on the same piece of tree bark. A few months ago, i was searching for the yellow auratum cos i remember having one. But i just couldn't find it. Now i know where it is.

Another Paph.bellatullum flowering recently.

The constant rain for the past few months did a lot of damage to my paphs. Many of them suffered bacteria rot almost at a rate of one leaf a day and i lost many plants including some which i had been growing for more than ten years. The damage is brought under control only with lots of Physan and keeping the affected plants dry and away from the others.

This is a nice violacea bought during the WOC in 2011.

Recently, there is an increase in the number of nice violaceas from Taiwan. These plants have good color and shape and the price is reasonable.

Phalaenopsis Seletar Tiger var 'Hot Chocolate'

This is a darker variety of Phal. Seletar Tiger, a cross made by MH nursery. The typical Phal. Seletar Tiger has flowers whose color fades afer it opens for a few days. The variety 'Hot Chocolate' however, does not suffer from color fading.

Phalaenopsis amboinensis 'Common'

This is a beautiful Phal. amboinensis 'Common' bought during the recent WOC. Compared to the normal amboinensis 'Common' this plant has flowers with darker and bolder bands. It is a pure 'Common' form and not a cross with the yellow form of amboinensis.

Coelogyne trinervis?

This is a Coelogyne from Thailand with pale flowers which look exactly like those of C. trinervis without the brown patches. The plant is huge, almost the size of C. celebensis.

Paphiopedilum philippinense

This is one of my most free flowering Paph philippinense. The flower spike appeared a couple of weeks ago and the flowers are almost all fully open now.

Dendrobium prenticei

This is a beautiful miniature Dendrobium found in North Eastern Australia. There are many similar looking dendobiums all labelled with the same name. I hppen to have three similar plants but this particular one seems to be more free flowering than the rest. The other two have more plump leaves.

An unknown bulbophyllum turned out to be B.blumei. The plant became free flowering after reaching maturity. This small to medium sized orchid can be found from Philippines, Borneo, Malaysia, Sumatra all the way to Australia. A very widespread species growing in lowland as well as highland forests.

I grow mine in a hanging basket filled with clay pellets. I think it will also do well if mounted on a coconut husk pole.

Another miniature Bulbophyllum

I cannot remember where this Bulbophyllum was purchased from but i think it is most likely from Song Orchids quite sometime ago. It looks like B.comberi with flowers appearing from the middle of the rhizome connecting the pseudobulbs.

Not many Paphs flowering at the moment. This is a niveum from Song Orchids which is just opening this morning. Paph. niveum is an easy Paph for our climate and do well if given about 50%-60% shade and good ventilation.

This is a supposedly wild collected Phal. violacea alba from Malaysia. Bought it from Mr. Lim of Penang a few years ago. The plant looks white but has an extremely faint pink tone.

This is a Phal. pulchra hybrid which i think may be from Mr. Lim of Penang. The plant is almost always in flower.

Bromheadia aporoides

This orchid has a plant structure that is very similar to some species of Dendrobiums. But the flower is distinctively different and very unique to the Bromheadia family. The white flowers open in the morning and by afternoon it will close and wither. Its lifespan is even shorter than Dendrobium crumenatum. But the flowers are beautiful and has a slight fragrance. I always miss the flowering for some reason but luckily this morning i spotted the flowers and quickly took a few shots.

This is a miniature Dendrobium with interesting looking leaves bearing small but very attractive flowers. The picture above shows the flower of a plant which i recently bought while the one below is from a plant that i have grown for many years. Flowers of the new plant has a deeper yellow background.

This miniature Bulbophyllum species should be from Thailand. The pseudobulbs are very small, about 1-2 cm across and 1cm high. The flowers are about 3-4 mm across.

I bought this phal from Song Orchids last year. The plant came from Mr. Robert Ang, a breeder in Malaysia. The plant was labelled R477 on the clay pot and a check with his website showed the plant's parentage as Phal. Taiping Ruby x Phal. Tan Lee Moy and it was recently named Phalaenopsis Permata Rosmah Mansor .

The plant is very free flowering and has not stopped flowering since i bought it. The color is a deep reddish purple with darker bars of the same color.

This variety of B.lobii from Sabah is orange in color while the west Malaysian variety is yellowish in color.

Paph concolor and praestans

Recently, many of my paphs are infected with the crown rot bacteria. Many healthy plants started turning soft and mushy and died. The base of the older leaves would first show a patch of soft brown which then spread to the upper portion of the leaf and other leaves as well.

After many sessions of dunking and spraying with Physan, some of the plants survived and are begining to flower again. Paph concolor is one of them. The flower size and shape is not as good as before but hopefully this will improve.

This Paph praestans did not get attaked by the bacteria but another plant was. This plant flowers annually without fail.

Two Bulbophyllums

These two Bulbophyllums are very similar in appearance. One is Bulb. fascinator while the other is Bulb. putidum. Both orchids can be found in Thailand and are easy to flower in Singapore. They like to be mounted on a piece of tree bark or fern bark which gives the plant good ventilation around the roots.

This is one my favourite Paphs. It s easy to grow in our climate and flowers easily as soon as the plant reaches flowering size. Woon Leng and Song Orchids frequency import them from either Thailand or Taiwan. This one has decided to hide inside the pot.

The gift from the sky turn out to be Bulbophyllum vinaceum. The flower opened on 1/3/2011.
It has a deep purple color and a pleasant fragrance.

When i saw this orchid lying on the forest floor, i first thought it must be B.lobii because it is one of the most widespread orchids in Borneo. But when it produced a flower bud i knew it was something else because the bud showed some purplish coloration. What a surprise!!

Paphiopedilum exul X Pinocchio

This hybrid shows strong Paph. exul characteristics. This plant was bought recently with a flower spike carrying one flower. That flower had since withered and dropped off. This is the second flower on the same flower spike. Paph exul produces single flower. The successive flowering trait comes from the glaucophyllum and primulinum in Pinocchio.

This yellow form created by MH nursery uses amboinensis flava as one of the parents thus producing flowers with dark yellow bars on light yellow background. This plant is also quite free-flowering.

After photographing the developing flower buds on Saturday, the white flowers finally opened yesterday filling the air with sweet raspberry-like perfume similar to Bulbophyllum lasiochilum (yellow variety).

The close-up of the emerging flower spikes of Coelogyne rochussenii. WL and Song Orchids refer to this orchid as the "Christmas Orchid" because in Singapore the plant typically flowers around Christmas. It produces many long trailing flower spikes with strongly scented flowers.

Well grown specimens can produce hundreds of flowers. Song Orchids is currently selling pots of these orchids with flowers. My plants are a bit late-flowering this time. The flowering seems to be in response to some environmental stimulus (most likely the recent cool nights).

This is one of the many reds i bought in the hope of getting a very red flower. It has bars instead of a consistent red. This variety of cornu-cervi seems to be very free flowerg compared to some older batches of cornu-cervis introduced into Singapore 10-20 years ago.

Coelogyne celebensis

One of my favourite plants, Coelogyne celebensis. As surly as the sun will come out tomorrow, this plant will have at least a flower in bloom every week. Managed to take a picture yesteray morning before the big black bee comes to eat it. It must be delicious because the black bee eats every one of them and then the two big pollen sag will get stuck to the back of the bee. It never eats the other flowers, not even the other Coelogynes.

This is a big mat of bulbophyllum bulbs from Thailand. When i bought it a few bulbs were sprouting flower spikes. None of them made it but recently some new flower spikes started to appear and these manage to develop fully. The flowers are very small, about 2-3 mm acoss. Will post the name when i find it.

Interesting whitish violacea

This is an interesting plant among a batch of Phalaenopsis violacea var coerulea (x sib) from WL. The flower is almost white but has a pinkish tone (rose white) and the lip is lightly pinkish. Really beautiful flower. Since whites can come from bluish sibling cross i wonder how many of the violacea alba out there are truly descendants of wild collected violacea albas.

A new plant of Bulbophyllum lasiochilum has recently flowered. This one has a very dark top and a contrasting light bottom with dark purple dots. The fragrance of this flower is very mild compared to the yellow variety.

Phalaenopsis Seletar Tiger

A very beautful orchid created by Mr Law MH. It is very free flowering, just like one of its parents, Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi 'Dark Star'. It will also produce keikis from old flower spikes and sometimes the keikis themselves start to flower while hanging in the air.

The flower bud on the right side of the picture opened on 23/01 and looks very beautiful too.

Habenaria lindleyana

This is a native orchid of Thailand which i grow in a big ceramic pot together with some lemon grass. The plant will wither away after flowering but it has underground tubers which wil produce another plant. Cannot remember how long was the hibernation period but i think it was less than two months.

Also, i think the recent pictures are better than those i took earlier partly due o the right lighting condition and partly due to the better lens used.

Two small little plants managed to survive this time after i sprinkled the seeds around the plant. One of them is completely covered by the leaf of the mother plant but it seem to do better than the one exposed to the sun.

Another of my all time favourites. This Coelogyne has one of the biggest flowers in the family.

Bulbophyllum sp?

This Bulbophyllum was recently purchased from Mr. Lim Song but i have no idea what is its name. Will update the name when i get it from him on my next visit. Interesting thing about the flower is that the petals seems to secrete a slimy mucus and i only came to realise it when i saw two flies stuck to the petals and when i tried to brush them off with my finger the sticky mucus formed trailing threads behind the dead flies. Will try to verify again on next flowering.

Dendrobium fimbriatum

This is an extremely beautiful Dendrobium found in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Bought it from WL nursery many years back. It flowered lst year but i think i did not manage to get good pictures of it. Beutiful orange-yellow flower with a deep maroon patch.

I bought this plant from WL nursery about six months ago and it flowered recently. The plant has pseudobulbs which are almost half a foot apart so it is not really suitable for confined spaces. It would be most happy if allowed to climb up a tree branch.

Phalaenopsis Valentinii 'Red'

This is an extremely red form of Phalaenopsis Valentinii (Phal.cornu-cervi x Phal. violacea). The color of the flower is of a deep bright red when it first opens. Extremely pretty.

A Few Plants Of Phalaenopsis amboinensis 'Common'

I recently acquired a few different plants of Phal. amboinensis 'Common'
First plant has quite beautiful flowers with dense bars although the bars are thinner and the flower shape is average. Hopefully the shape will improve when the plant is bigger.

The next plant produces huge flowers with very clean and bold bars but the bars are not so dense. The flower shape is better than the one above but maybe because the plant is very well grown.

The flower below belongs to a plant of Phal. amboinensis 'Nicole' AM/AOS which is an award winning amboinensis 'Common'. This plant has a bigger and rounder petal and brighter color.

The next flower belongs to another plant of amboinensis 'Nicole' but this one has more flower count and the flowers are bigger.

Dendrobium indivisum var. lampangense

This Dendrobium has small flowers which are pure greenich yellow in color. This particular plant is from Thailand. The typical Den. indivisum has cinnamon colored stripes whereas var. lampangense has pure color.

Got this from Yih-Cheng nursery a couple of years back when they participated in the Garden Tech Festival in Hort Park. This is one of those hybrids with a complicated parentage and i am not even sure of its name. Just enjoy it for its beauty.

Dendrobium farmeri

This plant flowered recently and i totally did not notice the developing flower spike at all. It is mounted next to some coelogynes and i thought i wanted to "starve" the coelogynes to induce flowering so i did not water them at all for a few days. The Dendrobium farmeri formed a flower spike instead and until now there is no response from the coelogynes at all. That's a classic case of "有心栽花花不发, 无心插柳柳成荫".

Dendrobium lamellatum

This small, warm loving Dendrobium can be found in Myanamr, Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, Borneo and the Philippines. This particular plant was collected from the Baring region of Malaysia. It has interesting stems which look as though they had been flatttened by a rolling pin. It also appear to be very free flowering.

Phalaenopsis violacea var. Sumatra and Phalaenopsis bellina (just added Phalaenopsis pallens)

Very nice Phal. violacea var. Sumatra. This is the first time it flower after i bought it a few months ago. There is some improvement in the shape and color of the flower.

This very round-shaped Phal.bellina is flowering again. If you are looking for good quality big and round Phal bellinas, the most famous local breeder has got to be Mr. Law Moi Hwa. Many oversea nurseries and breeders also produce such bellinas and you can get them in local shows and exhibitions but they are not cheap either. The problem is that those plants were grown in well sheltered nurseries with perfect temperature and water quality control so there is no guarantee that the plant will preduce the same quality flower when grown in our climate.

Many of our locally bred bellinas are grown in our weather since seedling and if you see a big round form then what you see is what you will get. So when some hobbyist say that their flowers are not the same as when they bought it from some reputed oversea growers the reason is obvious.

So instead of buying unreliable plants, it is better to spend a bit more and get one good one, or else you end up having half a dozen of $30 plants instead of a single good quality $200 plant.

So, how much is a reasonable price to pay? There are bellinas that cost $1000 or more all the way down to $5 a plant. The price for the plant above is about $200 so if you can get it for less, then you've got a great deal.

This is a Phaleanopsis pallens with excellent color. The bars are of a deep cinnamon which gives a very sharp contrast with the background of white. Although the color and marking of this flower is very similar to Phalaenopsis amboinensis 'Common', the lip is very different. The front portion of the lip is wider and triangular with hairy fringes and a tuff of hair near the front portion of the lip. Phalaenopsis pallens is supposed to have pale coloration but this one is deep.

This is a very free-flowering orchid and its flower is truely fascinating. Its natural habitat includes Burma, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam in primary montane forests at elevations of 1000 to 2000 m so it is suppose to be a cool-loving orchid. However, it does not seem to mind our warm weather here and almost every new pseudobulb produce a flower.

Rodriguezia secunda

This is an orchid that can be found fromThe Leeward and Windward Islands, Trinidad, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Surinam, Guyana, Fr Guiana to Brazil. Bought it from Song Orchids a few years back. It has beautiful bright pinkish red flowers arranged in a neat row down the drooopng flower spike.

It is a warm loving orchid so we've got the perfect weather for it here in Singapore. Sometimes 3 to 4 flower spikes are produced together in response to some environmental trigger.

The flower has a "tail" which i suppose has a bit of sugary reward for its intended pollinators. That may explain why ants are attracted to the flowers.

Pure Yellow Oncidiums

I have two pure yellow 'Golden shower-type' Oncidiums. One of them is from MH nursery while the other is from WL nursery. The one from MH nursery can truely be considered pure yellow because there are no markings on the flower at all.

The flower above belongs to the plant from WL nursery where some greenish yellow markings can be seen on the petals. The flower below came from MH nursery. The plant itself is smaller in size and the flower is pure yellow without any markings. Both of them are highly sought after for their pure color.

Habenaria lindleyana

This plant of Habenaria lindleyana went into hibernation mode after flowering, fruiting and then withering. Recently it sprouted again, pretty much near the same spot behind the cluster of Lemon Grass. There is also a very young plant which sprouted nearby after i spread the seeds nearby. So far only this small little one survived but i am quite doubtful that it will make it to maturity because most of last year's seedlings didn't make it. Anyway i am not too worried because Habenarias have underground root tubers with which to store food supply just like sweet potatoes so as long as i don't disturb the soil, the same plant will keep sprouting year after year.

This is the pine tree in front of the hotel (after the car park) with a very new colony of Bulbophyllum. The plant is growing at about a height of 2 storeys.

The next tree has another colony of orchid but it is too high for me to figure out the genus.

Coelogyne species

This clump of Coelogyne species produced another flower spike shortly after the first one withered. This flower spike is on the other side of the plant. the flowers and flower bracts are also creamy white in color and till now i am still unable to identify it. The flower is the same form as trinervis and flaccida but it has no markings. The leaf in front belongs to Bulbophyllum lindleyanum. its own leaf is very plicated as shown in the pic below and the pseudobulb is more than twice the size of my other Coel. trinervis plant. Also the flower spike is produced from the base and does not come from the centre of freshly developed new shoot like in the case of trinervis.

This plant came from Mr Lim Song's nursery in Penang. A fine specimen of Bulbophyllum medusae with very long petals.

Phalaenopsis bellina and Phalaenopsis violacea

This is a very big and round Phal. bellina from MH nursery. The flower gets bigger as the plant grows in size.

This is a Phalaenopsis violacea 'sumatra'. Bought it recently because it has very even color distribution compared to the rest of the lot. The flower is a bit distorted because it was tucked below a leaf. Hopefully the next flower will look better but the most important thing is that the petals don't curl backwards.

This is a Phal.violacea alba bought from Penang last year. According to Mr. Lim this plant was collected form the wild. It sure has all the malayan violacea features and scent too.

Coelogyne fimbriata

My colony of Coelogyne fimbriata is flowering again probably because of the increased rainfall recently. This is an extremely easy orchid to grow and because it flowers all the time, it adds a bit of life and color to an otherwise dull mass of green leaves around the coconut pole.

I bought a few bulbs of this Coelogyne species last year and mounted it on a large fern bark. It flowered recently and produced many cream colored flowers. The plant has plump pseudobulbs that are about 4 inches long carrying two plicate leaves about 1.5 feet long. The flowers arise from the base of the pseudobulbs. I have not been successful in matching it with pictures of Coelogyne flowers online. It looks like a Coelogyne flaccida without the colors.

Finally, a very nice blue violacea from Taiwan. The shape of the flower as well as the lip is that of violacea rather than between violacea and bellina.

Phalaenopsis amboinensis 'Common'

A very good amboinensis 'Common' with dark, bold and strong markings. I have been looking for a plant like this for a very long time. The two flowers on the flower spike still show the same color and intensity so hopefully there is no color fading problem. Most nurseries in singapore would label such plants as 'Not For Sale'.

Paph lowii and Paph haynaldianum

These two Paphs look so similar but there are differences between them. One of the very distinct difference is that the flower stalk of haynaldianum is more hairy (hirsute). There are other differences but i cannot manage to get a frontal picture of the Paph haynaldianum because the flower is pointing towards the back and i have difficulty accessing it. I try not to take the pot out for photographing because there are just too many obstacles in the way and i many break something.

A very beautiful Coelogyne colected from the forests of Malaysia. This is a huge coelogyne with long leaves on big pseudobulbs. This plant came from Mr. Lim Song in Penang who collects a lot of native malaysian plants.

Paphiopedilum glaucophyllum

This is another Paph that is suitable for Singapore's warm weather. If grown well, this orchid will keep on flowering for a long time. This Paph was used in the past to produce many beautiful hybrids such as paph Shireen and the strong glaucophyllum influence can be seen in such hybrids. Most of the hybrids produced using glaucophyllum can be grown well in Singapore without air-conditioning. My friend used to grow his Paph Shireen in a 2nd Storey balcony in Pasir Ris and we all know how warm it can be in Pasir Ris.

This plant of Paph. concolor is in flower again. Paph. concolor is one of the easiest Paphs to grow in our hot lowland condition and flowers easily too. Their enemies are snails, slugs, grasshoppers and the rain. If you can avoid all these then the plant will grow into a big clump in a few years' time.

This orchid (Wind Orchid) was bought from Song Orchids many years ago. It was in flower when i bought it but since then it has not flowered at all. I almost wanted to get rid of it when i spotted a flower spike developing. It sure has been a long wait. Seems that this plant needs cooler conditions to flower.
